Understanding Natural Diamond

We must first comprehend the process of diamond formation in order to comprehend diamond clarity. Natural diamonds are made when carbon is subjected to extreme heat and pressure in the earth's interior. Numerous internal traits referred to as "inclusions" and outward characteristics referred to as "blemishes" may be produced as a result of this procedure.

Evaluating Natural Diamond Clarity

The quantity, size, relief, kind, and position of these inclusions and blemishes must be considered when assessing a diamond's clarity, as well as how they affect the stone's overall appearance. Remember that no diamond is completely pure if you're trying to decide what level of clarity is best for one. But the clarity improves as it approaches purity.

Diamond Clarity Scale

There are a total of 11 distinct grades on the GIA Diamond Clarity Scale, separated into 6 categories.

Flawless (FL) No imperfections or inclusions apparent at a 10x magnification.

Internally Flawless (IF) Under 10x magnification, there are no inclusions to be seen.

Very, Very Slightly Included(VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions so tiny a skilled grader would struggle to detect them at 10x magnification.

Included Very Slightly (VS1 and VS2) Inclusions so small, but getting more visible that it takes effort to see under 10x magnification.

Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification but not to the naked eye.

Included (I1, I2, and I3) Under 10x magnification, inclusions are easily observed and may reduce transparency and sparkle.
